Triathlon Equipment

You only need the minimal triathlon equipment when you first start competing. In the small local Sprint and Super Sprint events, you can manage easily with a bathing suit, swim cap and goggles for the swim event, a fat-tire bicycle for the bike, and running shoes for both biking and running. As you progress into larger or longer events and become more serious about your training, you may want to look into additional equipment.

Triathlon Training Log

One of the first pieces of triathlon equipment you may want to invest in is a good Triathlon Training Log. This may be as simple as a notebook or something as high tech as one of the workout logs available from www.microsoft.com in their template area. You can customize these and nutrition logs for triathlon activities. Many of the triathlon websites also offer the use of training logs with registration; some of them are free, others are not.

Triathlon Wetsuit

For the swim portion of the triathlon, you may want to consider purchasing a triathlon wetsuit. These are not the same as a diving wetsuit. A triathlon wetsuit will help keep you warm in colder open water swims, and will help decrease the energy required to cut through the water. Several wetsuit styles are available, but no matter the style you choose, it's best to try on several to find what feels best for you. If you cannot try on wetsuits, then you need to be very exact with your measurements in order to find the right manufacturer.

Some triathlon wet suit manufacturers are:

  • Aquaman
  • Ironman
  • Orca
  • ProMotion
  • QR (Quintana Roo)
  • Xterra
  • Zoot

Triathlon Bikes

The more serious triathlete can expect to spend a substantial amount of money on a high quality bicycle. Triathlon bikes are a more aerodynamic version of the road racing bike. A triathlete can gain a serious advantage with a bicycle designed to cut wind resistance, this includes the use of aero-bars (handlebars), and changes to the frame, seat angle, and wheels.

Triathlon bicycle manufacturers include:

  • Felt
  • Guru
  • Kestrel
  • Quintana Roo
  • Scott

Triathlon Heart Rate Monitor

You use a triathlon heart rate monitor to help optimize your triathlon training. This may be as simple as a heart rate monitor or as complex as an event specific monitor. Some heart monitors have software that allows you to upload the information to a training/monitoring program. Some, such as the Ironman Triathlon Watch, come in several styles from a simple multisport watch to having a built in heart rate monitor.

Triathlon heart rate monitor manufacturers include:

  • Blackburn
  • Garmin
  • Polar
  • Suunto
  • Timex

It may be best to look for discount triathlon equipment when you're first starting out. Many of the retail websites have clearance sections, as the gear changes from year to year.

The final triathlon equipment that you need is a triathlon checklist. There is nothing more frustrating than to travel to an event and discover you've left a critical piece of equipment at home. Since the requirements vary from event to event, you need to make sure you've printed off the event checklist, and your own triathlon checklist, and double check all your triathlon equipment. A little organization will allow you to focus on the event and not your gear.
